The veteran East Cape team aboard Cowboy VII took advantage of an early bite to score the top daily marlin jackpot in Day 3 of the 11th annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament. The 441-pound blue marlin was fooled by a pink Hi-5 lure and after a 45-minute fight was boated. The team decided to run in early to avoid weight loss and the strategy paid off.
“We almost got spooled by the fish while we were clearing the other lines,” explained angler J.V. Lattimore. “After a minute of chaos, we got in the groove and everything went as it was supposed to.” … READ MORE »

If it remained the largest fish of the day, the team would pocket a cool $64,515 for the daily jackpot… READ MORE »

The first day of the East Cape Offshore Tournament was a dark one—in terms of fish, that is. The best single day in the event’s 11-year history was highlighted by a 531-pound black marlin, which was captured by Thomas Lansing aboard Dreamweaver, a 32-foot Blackfin.
“We didn’t have the baits in the water five minutes when the black ate a small yellowfin on a circle hook… READ MORE »

Tense. Charged. Nervous. Those are the normal moods of contestants on the eve of most high-stakes offshore tournaments. But’s that’s not the case here, where the 11th annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament is poised to get underway. Instead, the atmosphere at today’s registration and captain’s meeting was more like a family reunion. Sure, there was the typical good-natured ribbing between teams. But there were plenty of hugs, back slaps and friendly handshakes, too. After all, this is the East Cape, where sportfishing roots go back 50 years. The boats still anchor just off the beach, pangas serve as water taxis and the offshore fishing is as good as ever… READ MORE »
